It grew out of a disarmament campaign launched by students in 1997, at a time when Brazil had the world's highest number of firearm deaths, and has since become a leading voice on gun control and public security. The Brazilian Research Network on Peace Operations (Rede Brasileira de Pesquisa sobre Operações de Paz, REBRAPAZ) was launched in 2016 as an unprecedented initiative in Brazil, bringing together public and private, civilian and military institutions that work on research and teaching about peace operations. Its partners include the Brazilian Joint Peace Operations Centre (CCOPAB), the Institute of International Relations at PUC-Rio, the Instituto Igarapé and several university research groups.
